Why you can trust this article about billboards in Bali

Hi, I’m Victoria, and I’m your go-to source for Bali and Indonesia travel information.

I’ve lived on this beautiful island for several years now and visited plenty of times before that, both as a tourist and backpacker. I know how to save money and when to splurge on things, so I’ll introduce you to the best luxury getaways for a special occasion but also the cheapest airport pickups and fun group tours you can join if you want to make friends.

As a business owner in Bali, I’ve put up quite a few different billboards across the island, and I’ve had both very positive and very negative experiences. My work at my marketing agency always involves securing billboard spots for clients, and after trying many different companies, we finally found one that we’re happy with.

I’m organising different billboard advertisements across Bali almost every week, so you can save yourself time and effort on research and know that this guide is always up-to-date and trustworthy.

Avoid this when renting a billboard in Bali

I’ve personally tried quite a few billboard companies in Bali, and unfortunately, my experience wasn’t always great. Most have terrible customer service with slow responses, or they just don’t reply at all. Many also do not communicate in English, which isn’t required, of course (we are in Indonesia, after all), but makes it much more difficult for foreign-owned businesses to get a billboard.

We’ve also had issues with bad print quality or companies who do not honour agreements, take down billboards too early or do not replace damaged prints.

What I personally found is that billboard prices in popular areas like Canggu are getting extremely expensive and most billboard companies do not offer discounts even on long-term rents. Large billboards on the Canggu shortcut cost around IDR 40 million monthly with a three-month minimum, which is just not viable for most small companies.

We mostly look for lower-cost options, so finding the right company for billboards in Bali wasn’t easy.

Best billboard companies in Bali

While we don’t want to name and shame the companies we’ve had bad experiences with, we can recommend the ones we love, and use every time now. You definitely can’t go wrong with these options.

1. Billboard Legends

Billboard Legends is a clear winner for us and a go-to for billboards in Bali for me personally and also our agency in general. They’re a newer company, and their billboards are mostly focused on the Canggu area, including Pererenan and Umalas, with a growing number of options in Uluwatu as well.

What we love about Billboard Legends is their fantastic customer service (in English). They always reply quickly and give great discounts on long-term billboard placements.

Another plus is that they actually look for new billboard spots for you if they don’t have the perfect one available at the moment. They handle the entire process, and you only need to send them your design and your billboard will be up in no time.

They have a great selection of reasonably priced billboards available in all sizes, and prices start as low as IDR 4 million per month (depending on the spot, of course). We love to use them for all our clients because their quality is consistent, and we know we can rely on them.

Last year, some billboards we had rented were damaged in a storm, and others became the victims of graffiti. Billboard Legends got them replaced in only a few days, and their customer service was exceptional. We couldn’t recommend them more, and if you work with them, you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble and headaches.

2. Skoo Media

Skoo Media has a different approach to advertising. They offer mobile billboards on motorbikes, which have a little trailer that has a billboard on each side. There is a backlight, so the boards are clearly visible even at night. This is a great way to get visible and show off your brand in many different places around Bali at once.

With Skoo Media, you usually pick a neighbourhood of Bali, where the bikes will then drive around for eight to twelve hours per day. They always travel in pairs and usually have the same design on all sides of the trailer.

I’ve used Skoo Media in the past and was pretty happy with them. They offer much shorter rental durations, which can be great for brands with a smaller budget. However, their customer service was a bit unresponsive at times, and I’ve noticed that the prices they offer vary from person to person, which can be frustrating.

The drivers also aren’t the most reliable, and they often take long breaks, so I’ve found it can be a bit tricky to monitor how much driving time your billboard is actually getting.

Did you know you can get the best SIM card for tourists delivered to your hotel in Bali at no extra charge? Or get an eSIM, so you’ll be connected from day one.

3. Nusaka Bali

Nusaka is one of the largest advertising companies in the Canggu area, and they own a lot of the huge billboards you see along Jalan Raya Canggu and the shortcut. They also offer printing services and all sorts of custom signs, which can be convenient.

They operate all around Indonesia, but it can be a bit difficult to communicate in English with them at times.

We used to work with them a lot, but after discovering Billboard Legends, we rarely do anymore. This is mostly because Nusaka has very high prices, which lie around IDR 40 million per billboard per month with a three-month minimum retnal. As a large corporation, they don’t need to drop their prices, so getting a good deal is a challenge.

If you have a big advertising budget and are looking for a huge billboard, I would enquire with them.

Steps to advertising on a billboard in Bali

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the idea of renting a billboard in Bali, these steps will help you figure out the process.

1. Decide in which area of Bali your audience is

Where in Bali you should put up your billboard will depend a lot on your audience and where they spend most of their time. Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu are very popular for billboards, but if your business is based in Sanur, of course, your billboard should be there instead.

If you’re advertising a product, consider where your ideal buyer spends most of their time. It will make a huge difference.

2. Pick an existing billboard or an empty space

Now, take some time to drive around the area and have a look at the available billboards. Empty ones usually have a phone number you can message, and many billboard companies own several billboards in one location, so you can see what’s available.

Definitely consider if the spot you picked has a lot of traffic and if it’s clearly visible from all directions.

If there aren’t any interesting spots free, you can also have a billboard company like Billboard Legends find a new billboard location for you.

3. Contact the billboard owner or let an advertising company find a billboard for you

Once you’ve reached out to a billboard company, they’ll tell you all about their available billboards and how long they can be rented for. You might also want to look at empty lots or walls where you could put up a new billboard.

If you can’t find the owner of a specific billboard, you could try asking around and contacting neighbours or the local banjar. Most billboards in Bali belong to large companies or big restaurants or hotel chains, and very few have private owners, so you can usually find out who a spot belongs to if you do some research.

4. Decide on a duration and get a good price

Many billboards have a minimum of one to three months, although you can usually exchange the print for a small fee. We recommend inquiring with Billboard Legends because they offer long-term discounts, which many other companies in Bali do not.

I’ve found it quite difficult to negotiate a good price with most other companies, and many strictly do fixed prices, which can be frustrating if you’re renting for a long time.

5. Make your design and double-check it

I would definitely recommend hiring a graphic designer to design your billboard to make the most of your money. Don’t forget to show your design to several people and check it several times to avoid mistakes.

Depending on the size of your billboard you’ll need a specific print resolution, which the company will be able to give you advice on.

6. Go see your billboard in Bali

Once the design is sent, the billboard usually goes up within a few days. Drive past your billboard and check one last time if everything looks good and if you can read any text clearly.

I would also recommend checking in on your billboard occasionally to make sure there is no damage.

Should you put up your own billboard in Bali?

Technically, you can also put up your own billboard in Bali without working with an advertising company. Personally, I would not recommend this, as the process can be quite complicated, and you’ll most likely end up spending more time and money than you would just hiring someone to do it for you.

You’ll have to communicate closely with the local authorities and the banjar, which can be difficult if you’re not a local. There are also permits, taxes and regulations to consider. Many billboards in Bali are built illegally and frequently get torn down, and the owners are fined heavily.

Don’t risk it unless you have extensive knowledge of the Indonesian legal system. You’ll save yourself a lot of trouble.
