Why you can trust the beer prices in this article

Why ask me about beer prices? Hi, I’m Victoria, and I’m from Germany, so naturally, my favourite drink is beer. Trying the best beers while I travel the world is my favourite part of being a digital nomad, but in recent years, I’ve found myself spending most of my time in Bali. After living here on and off for several years, I’ve seen beer prices rise and fall throughout the pandemic, and now, many resources on alcohol pricing online are actually very inaccurate.

I live in Bali full-time now and spend a lot of time trying the best new bars and venues around the island, so you can bet that if anyone knows how much a Bintang actually is, it’s me! Also, please stop drinking Bintang, there are so many better beers out there. I’ll tell you which ones are worth it.

Bali is home to some delicious beers, both domestic and craft. Indonesian favourite Bintang is a popular lager served all over the island, along with Bali Hai, Prost, and Singaraja, which are produced by local breweries. For those looking for something unique, there are some fantastic craft brews made in smaller batches like Kura-Kura, Island Brewing, IOI, and Stark – sure to please even the most passionate beer connoisseurs.

Bintang

Since it was first launched in 1932, Bintang has grown to become an ice-cold, golden beer synonymous with the sun-drenched island of Bali. For visitors and locals alike, this crisp and refreshing pilsner is available across the island for an affordable price. Whether you enjoy a bottle in your hotel minibar or head to a supermarket where prices are at their most competitive, this beer is usually among the most affordable. Those looking for a more premium experience will be pleased to know they can find Bintang on draught on bar terraces, at beach clubs and even in late-night clubs across Bali.

The name Bintang means star in Indonesian, and the brand has become inconic in Bali’s tourist and nightlife scene. You can easily identify tourists by their Bintang singlets or bucket hats, which are sold all over the island.

Still, in my own personal opinion, Bintang is not the best domestic beer in Bali. Keep reading for my top pick.

How much is a Bintang beer in Bali?

The cost of Bintang in Bali is between IDR 18,000 and IDR 25,000 (~ $1.80 – $2.50 AUD) in a supermarket for a small bottle. In a bar you’ll pay at least IDR 20,000 to IDR 30,000 (~ $2.00 – $3.00 AUD) if you’re lucky, but more realistically between IDR 40,000 and IDR 70,000 (~ $4.00 – $7.00 AUD) for more upscale venues.

Singaraja

Singaraja is relatively new in Bali’s beer market, and its pilsener is rapidly gaining popularity. Made by the producers of Prost beer, Singaraja is meant to have a slightly stronger taste, appealing to international visitors and classic beer drinkers. However, in practice, it’s slightly sweeter than Bintang, with a hoppy taste and an unbeatable price. In my opinion, Singaraja is the best local beer in Bali (setting aside craft beer options), and it’s also often the most affordable.

The name Singaraja comes from Bali’s former capital, which is located in the north of the island.

Bali Hai

Bali Hai is a very popular beer brand on the Island of the Gods and one of Indonesia’s leading breweries. Indonesia’s Bali Hai Brewery has been brewing beer for more than 35 years, and it is named after a popular song from the musical South Pacific. The brewery has had an immense impact on the Indonesian brewing landscape, and its first draft beer was released in 1988.

Bali Hai Brewery produces some of Indonesia’s most beloved beers, offering a wide range of lagers, ales and other brews to suit all tastes. With decades of experience behind them, the brewers at Bali Hai have perfected their craft to ensure that their beers are always full-flavoured and high quality.

You might encounter a beer called Draft Beer in Bali, which is actually a type of Bali Hai beer and often the most affordable one available in bars. In my opinion, it’s not the best but considering its economic price it can be a good option. Regular Bali Hai is much better though.

Types of Bali Hai beer available

  • Premium Lager Munich Style
  • Draft Beer Lager
  • IPA El Diablo
  • Panther Black Beer

Prost

Prost is a budget-friendly local Indonesian beer that you’ll find in many bars across Bali. It’s often slightly more affordable than Bintang but not as widely available. Prost comes in a Lager (blue) or Pilsener (red) variety in both cans and bottles. They also have an Alster, sometimes called Radler, option, which is beer mixed with lemonade.

Despite its seemingly German name, Prost is an Indonesian beer and is mostly marketed towards locals. Prost is the German word for cheers.

Anker beer is an Indonesian classic, widely available and much-loved by locals. Not to be confused with the Cambodian beers Anchor or Angkor, Anker is an Indonesian beer. It’s not extremely common in Bali, but you might come across it in smaller bars where it is usually very affordable. This classic pilsener is not considered one of the best in Indonesia but more an average, low-cost option.

Kura Kura

Kura Kura is one of Bali’s most well-known craft beer brands that is rapidly gaining attention on the Island of the Gods. Their beers can be found in most upscale bars and beach clubs, as well as supermarkets and restaurants. Kura Kura’s biggest competitor is Island Brewing, another large craft beer brewer based in Bali.

While average prices for Kura Kura beer are high, their exceptional taste and quality speak for themselves. Kura Kura regularly hosts and sponsors events around Bali, and you’ll most likely see their billboards and advertisements frequently.

The name Kura Kura means turtle in Indonesian.

Island Brewing

Island Brewing, together with Kura Kura, are Bali’s most well-known craft beer brewers. Especially in the popular Canggu area, Island Brewing has a big presence through Black Sand Brewery, which is a large bar and beer garden located right in the centre. They also produce beers under the Black Sand label here with varieties such as Koelsch and IPA. Island Brewing and Kura Kura have similar beer varieties, although Island Brewing is ever so slightly more affordable than its competitor. Definitely make sure to try both to find your favourite – You can’t really go wrong with either.

Stark

Stark Beer is another craft beer producer in Bali, however, their beers are a lot less common than Kura Kura or Island Brewing. They claim to be the only premium craft beer produced in Indonesia, although it may be difficult to determine how premium craft can be defined. Stark is available in different parts of Indonesia, not just Bali, and recently opened a beer garden in the nightlife hotspot Kuta. The Stark beer brewery is located in northern Bali, close to Bulleleng.

Type: Craft

IOI (Island of Imagination)

IOI, which stands for Island of Imagination, is one of the smaller craft beer brewers in Bali. Their beers are typically available in speciality stores and less so in large bars or supermarkets. They offer a wide variety of beer options, and their colourful branding definitely stands out. Most of their brews are produced in small batches, and they use local ingredients as much as possible.

The Island of Imagination Brewery is located in eastern Bali, close to Sideman.

Foreign and imported beer in Bali

You’ll find most international beer brands in Bali, although Heineken, San Miguel, and Carlsberg are among the most common in bars and beach clubs. The best international beer selection can be found in liquor stores and speciality beer shops around the island, where you’ll find most popular Australian beer brands and craft beer from all around the world.

Storm beer Bali – Not available anymore

The popular Bali micro-brewery Storm had to close its doors in the early 2010s and is not producing beer anymore. It is not available currently, unfortunately.

Beer sizes in Bali

Depending on the type of beer and where you buy it, bottles usually come in two sizes: either 330ml or 650ml. Cans are usually either 330ml or 500ml. If you’re on a budget, definitely buy the large 650ml bottles wherever possible since they’re a lot more economical. You won’t really find liter bottles in Bali, just smaller or larger sizes.

Bali beer prices in supermarkets or minimarts

As a tourist, you’ll most likely mostly encounter smaller minimarts instead of large supermarkets. As is the case in many parts of Asia, these are actually not that much more affordable than bars. You might have an IDR 5,000 to IDR 15,000 (~ $0.50 to $1.50 AUD)difference per drink but especially in tourist areas, beer prices tend to be pretty much identical to affordable bars. Expect to pay between IDR 18,000 to IDR 50,000 (~ $1.80 to $5.00 AUD)for a small beer, depending on the type.

Bali beer prices in bars

Bar prices can vary depending on the establishment, but generally speaking, you should expect to pay between IDR 20,000 to IDR 60,000 (~ $2.00 to $6.00) per beer. This can depend on your location or the type of beer selected. Beer prices tend to be cheapest around Kuta, while Seminyak and Canggu are a bit more pricey.

OUR TIP

Traffic between Seminyak and Canggu is known to be disastrous, but did you know that you can also walk along the beach between the two towns? It takes less than an hour and this complete guide will tell you all you need to know about Bali’s most underrated hike.

Bali beer prices in beach clubs and nightclubs

Beach clubs are notoriously expensive in Bali, and you’ll find some of the highest beer prices on the island here. This applies especially to popular clubs around Uluwatu, Seminyak and Canggu. Expect to pay at least IDR 40,000 (~ $4.00 AUD) or more even for a local beer, with prices going as high as IDR 90,000 (~ $9.00 AUD) or more.

Nightclubs have very similar prices, although there is a difference between high-end options and more affordable venues. Budget between IDR 40,000 and IDR 90,000 (~ $4.00 and $9.00 AUD)per beer.

How to get the best deals on beer in Bali – tips on finding the best prices

After years of drinking beer on a budget in Bali, here are my top tips to save you some money.

1. Keep an eye out for the best happy hours

Most bars in Bali have some sort of happy hour, but not all are the same. Keep an eye out for 2-for-1 deals and compare happy hours before you choose your favourite drinking spot.

Happy hours are also the key to enjoying more expensive beers or drinking at expensive venues on a budget. Just head to a fancy beach club or a pricey venue like Black Sand during happy hour, and you’ll spend the same as you would in a more affordable bar.

2. Split a big beer

Large 650 ml bottles of beer are the cheapest option in most bars. However, the contents get warm very fast in the tropics and after a few, you won’t be able to drink them quickly enough. If you’re drinking with a friend or significant other, a good solution is to split a big bottle and get two glasses, so you can keep ordering cold beers but still enjoy the lower price.

3. Order beer buckets

Beer buckets are very common in Bali, containing anything between four and six bottles. Generally, around IDR 100,000 (~ $10 AUD)for a five-bottle bucket is a really good price. Beer buckets are a lot cheaper than ordering individual bottles, and your beer will stay nice and cold in the ice bath.

beer bucket bintang island brewing happy hour

4. Go to all-you-can-drink events

Bali has quite a few all-you-can-drink events, especially around Kuta and Seminyak. Sometimes, this only applies to women, but often you can pay a base rate and then enjoy as many beers as you like for several hours. LXXY rooftop pool club in Kuta is one of the best ones, and for only around IDR 150,000 (~ $15 AUD), you can get unlimited beer, spirit mixers and even food for three to four hours. If you’re planning on drinking a lot, this is a fantastic deal.

5. Watch out for ++ (tax & service)

A lot of menus in Bali will say ++ next to the food and drink prices. This means that tax and service are not included, and you will have to pay an extra 10% to 21% on top, depending on the venue. The extra fees are usually printed at the bottom of the menu, so make sure to double-check before you order. This price increase makes a big difference, and to be safe, you can always ask the waiter if prices are “net” or if tax and service are extra.

The Best Way To Experience Bali

Group tours are an incredibly underrated way to travel and you’ll get to experience Bali with new friends without any of the stress of planning. Compare the best tours here or check out my all-time favourite below.

6. Longterm tip: Order in bulk

If you’re in Bali long term and want to save some money on beer, you can order crates from a wholesaler for a cheaper price. They will give you discounts depending on the type of beer and how much you’re buying.

You can also get a partial refund if you return the glass bottles when they’re empty. This means your beer price could be as low as IDR 11,000 (~ $1.10 AUD) per small bottle (depending on the beer). Definitely order a big batch of beer if you’re planning a big party at a villa or birthday celebration in Bali.

Is alcohol expensive in Bali?

Alcohol in Bali can be either really cheap or really expensive. However, generally, Indonesia is a Muslim country, so prices for booze will always be slightly higher than in other places in South East Asia.

It all depends on what kind of alcohol you’re looking for. Beer and domestic spirits tend to be fairly inexpensive; however, a bottle of imported whiskey or vodka will run you more. If you’re looking to drink cocktails at the beach bars around Kuta and Seminyak, you may find yourself paying a bit more than you’re used to but still less than what it would cost in most other countries.

As a rule of thumb, the most expensive drinks in Bali are usually comparable to the prices in more expensive European countries.

bali price list drinks fridge

At what age can you drink in Bali?

The legal drinking age in Bali is officially 21. You’ll find signs everywhere that alcohol is not sold to younger individuals, although in reality, it is extremely rare for IDs to be checked. While it’s important to respect local laws and regulations, those between the ages of 18 and 21 will not have any issues accessing alcohol in Bali. If you’re hoping to connect with younger travellers in Bali, consider joining an organised trip, which involves drinking plenty of Bintang.

Does Bali airport have duty-free?

Shopping for duty-free products at Bali Airport is an effortless experience. Located in the Ngurah Rai International Airport, travellers can find a variety of duty-free stores offering a vast selection of general retail items, souvenirs and beauty products. Prices are sometimes cheaper than in other locations due to the tax exemption laws applied at stores. This mostly makes sense for name-brand liquor and wines, which will be more affordable. However, if you’re just looking for the cheapest possible alcohol, you’ll find cheaper local options around Balli than in the duty-free. The same applies to beer, which is rarely even sold in the duty-free.
