Why you can trust this article about the most unusual restaurants in Bali
Hi, I’m Victoria, and I’m your go-to source for Bali and Indonesia travel information.
I’ve lived on this beautiful island for several years now and visited plenty of times before that, both as a tourist and backpacker. I know how to save money and when to splurge on things, so I’ll introduce you to the best luxury getaways for a special occasion but also the cheapest airport pickups and fun group tours you can join if you want to make friends.
I try restaurants and write about them for a living, but I’m not going to lie, it does get boring to go to the same type of breakfast places or romantic restaurants over and over again. People opening new restaurants in Bali are unfortunately not very creative, so you get a lot of the same, especially if you live here, like me.
After almost three years, I find myself looking for unusual places to eat, and I appreciate a good twist when it comes to unique menus, themes, concepts or locations. I’ve compiled this complete list of unique restaurants in Bali that won’t bore you, and I guarantee you haven’t heard of some of them.
I’ve tried every single one myself, so you know my recommendations are genuine and personal.

The best unique restaurants in Bali
Make dinner extra special by dining at one of these fun and unconventional spots around Bali.
1. Swiss Chalet & Grill
Did you know that hidden away in a quiet corner of Ubud, you can have dinner at a traditional Swiss mountain cabin? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Swiss Chalet & Grill for the first time – it really looks like you just stepped into the Swiss Alps.
Complete with rustic decor, a real Alp Horn, a cow-shaped beer tap and, of course, incredible, authentic Swiss food, Swiss Chalet is by far my favourite unique dining experience in Bali.
The raclette and fondue are definitely my favourites and a must-try if you haven’t tried Swiss cuisine before. They only use the best, most authentic ingredients, so you know it tastes just like in Europe.
But Swiss Chalet isn’t only about the food, it’s about the ambience and unique setting that will truly transport you out of Bali and into a whole new world. If you’ve been looking for a new and unusual restaurant to try in Bali, I couldn’t recommend Swiss Chalet more.
Address: Jl. Raya Lungsiakan No.2C, Kedewatan, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia
Area: Ubud
Price: $$
Favourite dish: Cheese fondue and the Älplermagronen

2. Sa’Mesa
Sa’Mesa needs no introduction, it’s more than a restaurant and really takes experience dining to the next level. Picture this: You’re sitting at a big table with two dozen strangers, being served 18+ courses of incredible Italian food in a family-style setting, all while drinking free-flow limoncello.
Their motto, “Come as Strangers – Leave as Friends”, couldn’t be more true, and by the end of the night, you’ll be dancing on the tables.
If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable night in Bali, Sa’Mesa is the answer.
Note that they only do set dinners, so reserving your spot is absolutely necessary. They frequently sell out, especially on weekends, so book as soon as possible. They have a restaurant in Canggu and one in Seminyak, so you can choose which one you’re closer to.
Address: Canggu: Jl. Tanah Barak No.1e, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia Seminyak: Petitenget St Jl. Petitenget No.1a, Seminyak, Kuta Utara, Badung Regency, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Canggu and Seminyak
Price: $$$
Favourite dish: Gnocci & the burrata

3. The Cave
What could be more unusual than having dinner in a cave under a cliff in Bali? The Cave is the ultimate unique restaurant in Bali and absolutely unmissable, especially for a special occasion.
The restaurant only has 22 seats, so it’s very intimate and romantic. There are several light shows throughout the night, and there is AC, which I was very worried about before going because caves in Bali tend to be very hot and humid.
The setting and atmosphere were one-of-a-kind, but I have to admit I’ve had better food in Bali, especially considering the price range. The Cave serves very creative food, but it’s still far from a Michelin star, so keep in mind that you’re coming for the experience, not necessarily the menu.
You’ll be served seven or ten courses, and dinners happen simultaneously, so keep an eye out for their schedule. They can accommodate vegetarians but not vegans or those who are dairy, lactose or gluten-free.
Address: Jalan Pura Goa Lempeh, Banjar Dinas Kangin, Pecatu, Kec. Kuta Sel., Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Uluwatu
Price: $$$$
Favourite dish: Cauliflower and onion tartlet

4. Merlin’s
Ubud is known for its great restaurant selection, and Merlin’s is probably the most unusual choice in the area. This place is all about magic and they’re known for their famous tarot menu, where you choose your dishes according to different cards.
The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, and you’ll love all the little details. It’s very insistent on the Merlin theme and can be a bit childish, but the setting in the evening is definitely more romantic. They frequently have live music, and dinner here is definitely an experience that goes beyond just food.
They sometimes also host a theatre experience with a set menu and an hour-long performance. Although i haven’t tried this myself, everyone I know who has absolutely loved it, although it is quite pricey.
Address: Jl. Raya Pengosekan Ubud No.108, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia
Area: Ubud
Price: $$
Favourite dish: Dry season curry

5. Rumah Gemuk
Located in the hills of Bedugul with views of the lake, Rumah Gemuk is a beautiful greenhouse-style wedding venue that operates as a restaurant on most days.
The grounds are truly stunning, with lots of plants and flowers, making this one of the most photogenic places in Bali, and perfect for taking Instagram pictures.
They also offer a picnic setup, which will make your experience here extra special. It’s a bit pricey, though, and personally, the food didn’t really stand out to me, so adjust your expectations. The views more than make up for it, though.
Please note that Rumah Gemuk is very popular and you should definitely make reservations, especially since they host so many weddings here. There is an IDRr 100,000 minimum spend per person.
Address: Jl. Drupadi No.2, Candikuning, Kec. Baturiti, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 82191, Indonesia
Area: Bedugul
Price: $
Favourite dish: Burger

6. Gajah Putih
If you’re looking for dinner and a show in Bali, I would highly recommend Gajah Putih. This is a newer restaurant located south of Ubud, and they truly provide a unique dining experience unlike any other.
You’ll be served a fine dining set menu dinner accompanied by a theatre performance, which perfectly completes their concept of providing a stage where food becomes art.
There are 11 courses served throughout the night, and I thought the food was very delicious, but also creative. I’d definitely recommend it even though it is quite pricey.
Address: Jl. Raya Mawang No.88, Lodtunduh, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80582, Indonesia
Area: Ubud
Price: $$$$
Favourite dish: Ubud rosella sorbet

7. Lounge in the Sky
Have dinner in the sky 50 metres above the heart of Seminyak and get some of the best views of Bali’s beautiful coastline. Since there are no skyscrapers in Bali, this is the closest thing you can get to rooftop views.
The tables are completely open to the air, and you’ll be strapped with nothing but open sky around you. This might not be a great fit for those with a fear of heights, but if you don’t think about it too much, you’ll have a fantastic time.
They have different packages, including a full dinner or just drinks, and your time in the sky will be between 40 minutes and one hour. I loved this experience, and the food was actually surprisingly good.
Address: Seminyak Square, Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Seminyak
Price: $$$
Favourite dish: Lasagna

8. Koral
Koral is one of Bali’s most popular, unique restaurants and a must-try for families or those looking for the ultimate Instagram picture. This is an aquarium restaurant, so you can enjoy a multi-course dinner surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of coral and swarms of fish.
They offer different set menus with a variety of Indonesian, Western and fusion dishes and wine pairings.
The tunnel section of the restaurant, which is by far the most impressive, sells out very far in advance, so make sure to reserve as far in advance as possible. But it’s worth it, and you’ll get to see fish swimming above and all around you while you dine.
It’s easiest to grab a spot in the main room of the restaurant, which has a big aquarium wall and is just as beautiful.
Address: Jl. Raya Nusa Dua Selatan, Sawangan, Nusa Dua, Kabupaten Badung, Bali, Indonesia
Area: Nusa Dua
Price: $$$
Favourite dish: Strawberry Sensation dessert

9. Keramas Aero Park
On the east coast of Bali, between Sanur and Padang Bai, close to the small town of Saba, you’ll find the Keramas Aero Park, one of Bali’s coolest lunch spots. Surrounded by rice fields and with beautiful views of Nusa Penida, the Keramas Aero Park is great for families and those looking for a unique dining experience that goes beyond what you might be used to in Bali.
The restaurant is located inside an old Boeing 737-400, and they also have seating just below the plane on a grassy area. You can sit in the cockpit and the plane is even airconditioned, so it’s not too hot.
You’re definitely not coming here for the food, which is decent but not special, but rather the beautiful setting that you won’t find anywhere else in Bali.
Address: Jl. Bay Pass Ida Bagus Mantra KM. 28 Keramas, Medahan, Kec. Blahbatuh, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia
Area: Saba/Gianyar
Price: $$
Favourite dish: Vegetable curry

10. Frankenstein’s Laboratory
Frankenstein’s Laboratory is a Halloween-themed restaurant in Seminyak and a favourite among families in Bali. If you’re looking for the ultimate spooky experience year-round, you’ll love this spot that takes horror seriously.
They have spooky drinks and dishes, zombie face painting, creepy merch and their famous cabaret shows performed by the dancing dead. You can see these every night at 5:30 and 7:30 PM, although the late show is only recommended for kids aged 11 and above.
I’ve enjoyed the food here, but it’s not anything special – the experience is definitely what makes this place stand out.
Address: Jl. Camplung Tanduk No.6, Seminyak, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Seminyak
Price: $$
Favourite dish: Pizza

The Best Way To Experience Bali
Group tours are an incredibly underrated way to travel and you’ll get to experience Bali with new friends without any of the stress of planning. Compare the best tours here or check out my all-time favourite below.
11. SHUN
SHUN takes Japanese food to the next level, and if you’re looking for a unique place to eat in Canggu for a special occasion, you’ll love it. This is more than a traditional restaurant. They only have set menus, with either 14 or 19 courses according to the Omakase concept, so you’ll have an experience that will be impossible to recreate.
This restaurant is definitely expensive, with set menus ranging from IDR 1.4 million to IDR 1.9 million per person. It’s worth it, though, and if you love modern Japanese food, SHUN is the place for you.
I personally found that the dishes here are very complex, with quite a few unusual food combinations that might surprise you. You have to give it a chance and really open yourself up to the experience.
Address: Jl. Pantai Berawa No.99, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Canggu
Price: $$$$
Favourite dish: Otoro tuna sashimi

12. Casa Tua
Casa Tua is one of my personal favourite restaurants in Canggu and a great place to go if you want to try authentic Indonesian food in a more upscale setting. This place is definitely quirky, which you’ll realise as soon as you meet the free-roaming rabbits that live in the restaurant. You can feed them with carrot peels, and they’ll hop around your feet throughout the dinner.
The value for money is fantastic here, and the food is always excellent. Plus, this is actually a very romantic restaurant, and the unique decor makes it even better.
Address: Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.10, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Canggu
Price: $
Favourite dish: Bamboo rice special

13. Inklusiv Warung
Inklusiv Warung in Canggu is a highly underrated unusual restaurant, and perfectly balances a unique dining experience with social impact. A large part of their staff are deaf and the restaurant prides itself in empowering the disabled as well as the LGBTQ community, which is often marginalised in Indonesia.
Inklusiv Warung hosts drag shows and a variety of work shops and their endeveaur is something well worth supporting. You can even learn Indonesian Sign Language here, plus the food is always exceptional and very affordable.
Address: Jl. Munduk Catu No.8A, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Canggu
Price: $
Favourite dish: Vegetarian foccacia

14. Le Petit Chef
Le Petit Chef is perfect for those who love Disney and cute experiences that make dining interactive. This global phenomenon has now reached Bali and you can try it for yourself right in the heart of Seminyak.
Le Petit Chef is somewhat hard to explain. You’ll be guided through your dinner with a light animation sequence that projects stories and characters onto your plate and the entire table. This makes dinner a lot more fun and, of course, the food is delicious. This experience is perfect for all age and promise an evening you won’t forget.
Address: TS Suites, Seminyak, Jl. Nakula No.18, Legian, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Seminyak
Price: $$$
Favourite dish: Truffle ravioli

15. Shooters
If going out to eat sounds boring, you can level up your experience at Shooters. Come here for all sorts of games, including mini golf, axe throwing, ping pong and even shooting.
Sit in their beer garden and try different activities while you’re there. Prices are very reasonable and this is a great spot to go with a group of friends.
Address: Jl. Petitenget No.43D, Kerobokan Kelod, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
Area: Seminyak
Price: $
Favourite dish: Mac & cheese
