Best sushi & Japanese restaurants in Canggu

Canggu has fantastic sushi and lots of authentic Japanese restaurants, and you’ll find the absolute best ones on this list.

1. Yuki

Yuki is a modern Japanese restaurant located right at the beach in central Canggu. It sits just off Batu Bolong street and is a very popular dinner spots for couples and larger groups for special occasions.

Yuki also opened a second spot in Uluwatu, which is just as popular. Definitely make sure to make a reservation because this place fills up fast.

Lunch is slightly quieter but still packed on weekends, and they also run a Sunday brunch with bottomless food and drinks, which is highly recommended.

Their food is Japanese with all the classics, including sashimi, maki rolls, yakimono and yakitori charcoal grills. They have a handful of vegetarian and vegan options as well, so it’s great for people with dietary requirements.

Yuki also has specials all the time, including ramen and more fusion-oriented dishes. We love to come here for happy hour on Fridays and I would highly recommend their cocktails, which are very high quality.

2. Miss Fish

Miss Fish is a high-end Japanese restaurant with an omakase concept, so the chef will prepare the food right in front of you (depending on the seating of course) according to your tastes. Dining at Miss Fish isn’t only about very high-quality Japanese food, but it’s also an immersive experience with entertainment and plenty of parties.

Miss Fish is a chic restaurant in the early evening and then slowly transforms into a dimly-lit lounge and finally a packed nightclub with electronic DJs and a crowded dance floor. They stay open until 3 AM and especially weekends as well as Tuesday nights are very busy.

Needless to say, the food at Miss Fish is very good, especially the hand rolls. If you’re looking for high-quality Japanese food in Canggu, this is the best one you’ll find. You absolutely need reservations here; there is only a very limited number of tables.

In the evenings, they charge an entrance fee for the party, and the lines get very long. If you can, get on the guest list with the help of a promoter; it will make getting in much easier.

3. Billy Ho

Billy Ho is a large Japanese-fusion restaurant located on Batu Bolong Street, not far from the beach. This is a popular dinner spot and they offer a variety of sushi rolls, but also more Western dishes like the burrata, or other Asian influences like the Peking duck and dim sum.

I really enjoy the food here and the suhsi rolls and the bento box especially are very good. They offer different boards and selections if you ask the waiter, so you can try a bit of everything.

Billy Ho is definitely an upscale restaurant and can be a bit pricey, but the quality of the food is worth it. It’s usually pretty packed, so get a reservation for dinner to avoid having to wait.

4. Shichirin Canggu

Shichirin is a Japanese restaurant in Berawa, combining the three dining experiences teppanyaki, gyukatsu and izakaya. They also have a restaurant in Ubud, so you can choose which one to try.

Shichirin is definitely upscale and recommended for a date night or fancy dinner. I love their show kitchen, so definitely grab a seat there if you can. Note that the sushi selection is quite small, so if you’re coming specifically for that, you won’t have the biggest selection. But Shichirin does have a lot of different Japanese dishes to try, so don’t limit yourself.

If you’re looking for an instagrammable dish (which you can post along with our (Bali Instagram captions), I would recommend the pink sushi, which I haven’t found anywhere else in Bali.

5. Tygr

If you ask someone who lives in Canggu where they go to have sushi, they’ll probably say Tygr. This low-key spot is affordable, delicious and you get to choose between their Batu Bolong location and the one in Berawa (or the one in Ubud).

Tygr always has promos going on, specially on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays when you can get considerable discounts. Tygr may not be fine dining or upscale like some of the other Japanese restaurants on this list, but it’s laidback and the food quality is still exceptional.

They also have one of the best vegan selections when it comes to Japanese food in Canggu with their whole vegan roll menu, so I would highly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t eat fish.

6. One Eyed Jack

One Eyed Jack is a modern Japanese restaurant in Berawa, located very close to the beach. I’ve been here for dinner a few times and really enjoyed it. The chef used to work at the renowned Nobu chain in the United States, so the food is very good, and slightly different to many of the other Japanese restaurants in Bali.

They’ve been around since 2016, which is very long for Canggu, so One Eyed Jack has had plenty of time to perfect their menu and establish themselves as one of the best places to have Japanese food in Bali.

One Eyed Jack includes fusion concepts and also have dishes like tacos or bao on the menu. I really enjoyed their cocktails, which are very unique.

They only have a handful of sushi rolls on the menu, but everyone I’ve tried so far was very good.

7. Ensō

Enso serves Japanese fusion, includig delicious sushi, sashimi and much more. With a large menu of dishes to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find your new favourite here.

Prices are reasonable, and they have a great happy hour with extremely affordable cocktails, which makes for the perfect dinner combination.

The venue is also quite cool and very spacious, so if you’re looking for a cool new dinner spot, you’ll love Enso.

8. SHUN Omakase Counter

SHUN takes Japanese food to the next level, and if you’re looking for a unique place to eat in Canggu for a special occasion, you’ll love it. This isn’t a traditional restaurant. They only have set menus, with either 14 or 19 courses according to the Omakase concept.

This restaurant is definitely expensive, with set menus ranging from IDR 1.4 million to IDR 1.9 million per person. It’s worth it, though, and this place is definitely unlike any other.

I personally found that the dishes here are very complex, with quite a few unusual food combinations that not everyone will enjoy. You have to give it a chance and really open yourself up to the experience.

The Best Way To Experience Bali

Group tours are an incredibly underrated way to travel and you’ll get to experience Bali with new friends without any of the stress of planning. Compare the best tours here or check out my all-time favourite below.

9. Kaemon

Kaemon is a Japanese restaurant with two outlets in the Canggu area, including one in Munggu, close to Seseh, and another in Tumbak Bayu, just north of Canggu. While these are technically a little bit further away (only around 5 to 10 minutes from Canggu), Kaemon deserves a spot on this list for their affordable and delicious sushi rolls and Japanese specialities.

Kaemon started out as a more warung-style place, but their newer location in Munggu is very modern now. We used to exclusively order from Kaemon via grab and gojek, but now actually end up going there quite often for lunch for their sushi promo.

They have an insane selection of sushi rolls, and even though I try to order a new one every time I go, I still haven’t tried them all. Their udon noodles are also incredible. The menu is absolutely huge, with over 40 pages, so they have the widest selection of Japanese food in Canggu, in my opinion.

Kaemon has good food and reasonable prices, so it remains one of my most visited sushi places in Canggu.

Address: Munggu: Jl. Pantai Munggu, Canggu, Kec. Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia and Tumbak Bayu: Jl. Raya Tumbakbayuh, Tumbak Bayuh, Kec. Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia

10. Sama Sama Prime

Sama Sama Prime is all about minimalistic design and Japanese BBQ. The focus at this restaurant is definitely not sushi but the large selection of meats, including wagyu and prime beef.

There are tabletop grills, so you can enjoy everything as fresh as possible. I also really like the service here, everyone is always very attentive and friendly and I’ve only had great experiences.

I would definitely recommend this spot for a nice dinner in Canggu.

11. Indigo

Take Japanese food to the next level at Indigo, where you can enjoy innovative new food combinations in a beautiful setting. The venue is very pretty and great for an elevated lunch or dinner with friends.

Just note that they close in the afternoons between their lunch and dinner service, so time your visit right.

For dinner, I would definitely make reservations if you’re dining here on a weekend, but during the week, you can be more spontaneous since the restaurant is quite large.

Indigo has a real Japanese chef, so you already know the food is amazing.

12. Sushimi Berawa

If you’re looking for a sushi conveyor belt experience in Canggu, you need to try Sushimi. Located in the heart of Berawa, Sushimi is affordable, fun and casual – perfect for lunch with friends.

Their domed bamboo ceiling makes this a pretty cool restaurant, even though it’s small.

They often have special deals, like all plates 20k on Sundays, and they’re also quite popular for catering in case you’re organising an event. Considering the price, the food quality is actually very good, and the conveyor belt system makes it even more fun than a regular restaurant.

13. Ji

Ji is located right by the beach at the end of Batu Bolong and they have a beautiful rooftop terrace with incredible sunset views. They focus on modern Japanese cuisine with an emphasis on sushi and a large menu of choices.

The sushi platters are definitely impressive and highly recommended. I also love the udon dishes here – they never disappoint.

Ji is great for sunset drinks and you can watch the surfers if the tide is right. They’re also recommended for larger events with lots of people and we appreciate the reasonable prices and great food.

14. Fuji Sushi

Fuji Sushi is a chain restaurant with locations in Berawa, central Canggu, and also Sanur. This is a low-cost sushi spot and not really comparable with some of the high-end Japanese restaurants on this list, but it’s worth mentioning if you’re on a budget.

They pride themselves in having the most affordable sushi in Canggu, starting at only 28k per roll. They also offer bento boxes, udon, nigiri and sashimi and more. They’re also one of the only places in Canggu claiming to make healthy sushi.

For such low prices you can’t expect culinary masterpieces of course, but the food I’ve had here has always been decent, and it’s a great place to order takeaway food from. The restaurants are pretty small and not very busy since most people don’t eat in. I would recommend this for a quick lunch or for delivery, but don’t expect great ambiance.

Address: Berawa: Jl. Pantai Berawa No.101A, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia and Canggu: Jalan Shortcut Teratai Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia
