Can you actually walk from Seminyak to Canggu along the beach? Yes, but you should know a few things before you go.
We’ve spent years living in both Seminyak and Bali, and the walk between the two popular towns has become our standard evening ritual. Since Bali isn’t exactly pedestrian-friendly, it’s difficult to find good walking routes, and this is one of our absolute favourites. A walk from Seminyak to Canggu is the perfect excuse to see a different part of the island and discover Canggu if you haven’t already. Save yourself the taxi ride and get some exercise in instead.

How walkable is Bali?
Bali is, unfortunately, not very walkable and it’s usually best to rely on ridesharing apps like grab or gojek to get around (but don’t use Uber). There are very few sidewalks around the island, and even if they exist, they’re usually full of obstacles, have open sewers and occasional holes, so it’s easy to trip.
In areas like Seminyak and Canggu, scooters frequently use the sidewalks when traffic is busy. This means pedestrians are disadvantaged and won’t have a very enjoyable experience walking around.
Luckily, the beach is much better suited for long walks, especially during sunset.
OUR TIP
Arriving at the airport in Bali and need a reliable pickup service? Unfortunately, grab, and gojek don’t work like they usually do there. Read our complete guide, which has everything you need to know before you go to make sure your trip is as smooth as it can be.

Can you walk along the beach from Seminyak to Canggu?
Yes, you can walk along the beach from Seminyak to Canggu, passing by Petitenget, Batu Belig, and Berawa on the way. It’s all pretty much one continuous beach, with occasional small rivers that flow into the ocean.
You can easily wade through them though, and the water will only come up to your knees, even in the deepest parts. In total, you’ll have to cross around 5 to 10 rivers, depending on recent rainfall and the tides.
The beaches between Seminyak to Canggu are usually busy, especially during the late afternoon and early evening. This is when most tourists and permanent residents in Bali gather to watch the sunset, so the time between 5 PM and 7 PM is definitely the most crowded. If you enjoy people-watching and want to see plenty of dogs playing in the surf, this is the best time to go.

How long does it take to walk from Seminyak to Canggu along the beach?
If you walk quickly, it will take around 45 minutes to walk the approximately 5 kilometres between Seminyak and Canggu. This depends of course on where exactly you begin your walk, where you end and if you stop along the way. It’s better to factor in an hour since you most likely won’t be able to walk very fast on the sand.

Is the walk challenging?
Going for a walk on the beach always requires more effort than a regular route. The beach in this part of Bali has a lot of loose sand that forms small hills so you’ll get tired quickly. Closer to the water, you’ll find more compacted, wet sand that is easier to walk on but your feet will get wet.
So while the walk from Seminyak to Canggu isn’t unusually challenging, it does drain your energy so consider carefully if you want to walk all the way back or take a taxi instead.

Can you walk from Seminyak to Canggu during high tide?
Yes, it’s possible to walk from Seminyak to Canggu during both high and low tide. Since the beach has a slight incline, the tidal difference isn’t incredibly large, and there is still plenty of space to walk. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to cross several small rivers that flow into the ocean, which may have higher water levels when the tide is in. This just means you might be up to your knees in water, instead of up to your ankles.

Can you walk from Seminyak to Canggu on the road?
This isn’t recommended since Bali doesn’t have safe sidewalks and the traffic in this area is extremely busy. Since there is no direct route, walking on the road will take at least twice as long and won’t be a very enjoyable or safe experience.

Is it safe to walk on the beach in Bali at night?
Bali is generally a very safe place for travellers, and the crime rates are low. You should use common sense, no matter where you travel, and avoid going to dark, isolated places by yourself at night. Still, it’s technically possible to walk along the beach from Seminyak to Canggu at night, but you should be in a group and stay away from the water for safety reasons.

Where should start your beach walk?
You can start walking on the beach almost anywhere in Seminyak, including Double Six Beach or even Legian. Since the beaches here are all connected you can even walk to Canggu from Kuta.
The beginning of the beach walk has a boardwalk, which is shaded and is very nice for walking. It connects the area from around La Plancha all the way to the Beachwalk in Kuta.
Unfortunately, there is no boardwalk between La Plancha and Canggu.
Our tip: Kuta is located just a quick drive from Seminyak, and LXXY might just be the best place for a night out. For less than 10€ you can enjoy their all-you-can-eat-and-drink deal on their rooftop pool deck. You’ll love it.

Where should you end your beach walk?
Canggu is large, and there are several beaches to choose from here. Most people consider Batu Bolong the centre of town, and you’ll love the selection of beach bars here offering affordable beer. There is also Eco Beach, which is just a 5-minute walk away. There are pros and cons to visiting Canggu, but I personally love it.
If you’re up for it, you can even walk as far as Pererenan, which you can recognise by its impressive, colourful statue. Then there is Pantai Lima, Seseh and the list goes on. Once you pass these small towns the beach becomes deserted with more untouched nature. This is the perfect area to escape the crowds and see the real Bali.
If you’re ending in Canggu, make sure to try these vegan restaurants, Italian restaurants, breakfast places and romantic dinner spots while you’re there. You might also like these sports bars and nightclubs.

Seminyak to Canggu – how long will it take in a taxi?
Of course, you can walk back down to Seminyak along the beach, after you spent some time in Canggu. However, it’s easy to underestimate how tired you’ll feel so keep a backup plan in mind in case you’re not up for it.
You can always call a taxi, grab or gojek, which will take you home for only around IDR 30,000 on a motorbike or IDR 60,000 for a car, but make sure you avoid Canggu’s no-gojek zones. Seminyak also has a few areas where getting a grab is not as easy as it should be. You can find our where in our complete guide.
Just keep in mind that the roads between Canggu and Seminyak are some of the worst in Bali when it comes to traffic jams. Especially in the early evening, you can expect to take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours for the drive, which should normally be less than 30 minutes.

1. Beach Clubs
Bali has a million beach clubs to choose from (not literally, but it feels like it sometimes) and some of the best ones lie between Seminyak and Canggu. You can stop and have a drink at one of them, or just admire their infinity pools and sun loungers from afar. You might spot Finn’s Beach Club, Atlas Beach Club, Cafe del Mar, The Lawn, La Brisa, and Potato Head on your walk. These spot are expensive though, so you might enjoy the beachfront bars with beanbags more if you’re on a budget.
Our tip: If you’re travelling Indonesia on a budget you’ll love these tips I’ve accumulated over the years. They might just save your wallet. You can also check out our complete guide on beer prices in Bali here.

2. Caravan
You’ll pass countless beach bars on this walk, but Caravan should be high on your list of places to stop and enjoy a cold Bintang. They have a laidback vibe with reasonable prices and stunning decor. In the evenings, Caravan even has a live DJ sometimes. Beach bars like this are also a great spot to make new friends if you’re a solo traveller.
3. Berawa Beach Gym
In Berawa, you’ll pass a small beach gym with weights and basic equipment. It’s free to use, and a lot of people actually do. Get in a quick workout with ocean views if you have the time.

4. Spot the fishing boats
Between Berawa and Batu Belig, the beach becomes a bit quieter and bars with beanbags are replaced by traditional fishing boats. While the area is still very busy and touristy, you can still catch a glimpse of the traditional lives of Bali’s fishermen.
5. Find the best beach dogs
Bali is famous for its beach dogs who live independent lives. Just before sunset the beach comes alive with people walking their dogs and strays running and playing in the surf. If you’re a dog-lover you’ll have the time of your life. If not, no need to worry; If you don’t pay attention to them, the dogs will ignore you.

6. Try street food
You’ll usually find a variety of beach vendors selling snacks like grilled corn, tofu or satay on your walk from Seminyak to Canggu. I’d highly recommend the corn specifically, which is one of Bali’s famous street food specialities.
7. The Berawa Toilet (if you need it)
A toilet might not be an attraction, but the Berawa Toilet is a lifesaver if you have to go. It’s newly built, and right at the beach so you can make a pitstop on your way to Canggu. Most beach bars also have toilets, but they will charge you to use them, and they won’t be nearly as clean.
8. Shop for souvenirs
If you’re sitting in a beach bar somewhere, you’ll be approached by vendors selling sarongs, bracelets or souvenirs. If you haven’t already, you can get your shopping in during your walk.
DID YOU KNOW
You’re going to encounter a lot of fakes while shopping in Bali and most of the time it’s pretty easy to spot them. But did you know that even official-looking stores like Polo Ralph Lauren are actually counterfeitsin Bali? We reached out to the brand and you might be surprised how they responded.

9. Drink a coconut
Bali’s coconuts are incredible, and there’s no better place to enjoy one than on the beach in Canggu. You’ll pay between IDR 25,000 and IDR 40,000 for one, and the beach vendors will open it for you once you’re done so you can eat the insides.
10. Help keep Bali clean
Pickup up trash may not be very fun, but Bali needs all the help it can get. Why not do your part to keep the island clean and collect some plastic if you see it on your walk? Every little bit helps.

Tips for your walk from Seminyak to Canggu
I’ve walked from Seminyak to Canggu countless times. Here are some things I wish I had known before doing the walk for the first time.
- Wear flip-flops: You’ll have to get your feet wet so make sure to wear flip-flops or slides. Bring a small backpack, so you don’t have to carry your shoes for an hour if you go barefoot.
- Bring a hat: If you’re walking from Seminyak to Canggu any time after mid-day, the sun will be on your face, so a hat is a lifesaver.
- Bring a swimsuit: You can leave your bag with a beach vendor (it’s safe to do) and go for a swim.
- Go just before sunset: Everyone watches the sunset in Bali so the beach will be bustling with people. I love this time of day but if you prefer a quieter experience, the morning may be the better choice.
- Walk at least until after Berawa on the way home: If you want to get a taxi on the way home in the evening, you’ll most likely be stuck in traffic for hours. Make it a bit better by walking until after Berawa (around this area), ideally closer to Batu Belig. The roads will hopefully be less congested here, and you might save yourself an hour in the car.
